Savages-2

Adore is the second release from post-punk band Savages following their very well received first album Silence Yourself.  Thankfully, this is a terrific album that does not adhere to the dreaded “Sophomore slump” tag many artists get upon their second release. The album kicks off with the terrific bombastic track “The Answer” and never really backs down from there.  Singer Jenny Beth proves that despite being a punk band you can still deliver beautiful and touching vocals.  This is especially true on “Surrender” and the album closer “Mechanics”, where she lets down her guard for some to explore a more sensitive sound .  They even get a little funk sound in on “Slowing Down the World.” While the volume and intensity of the overall sound may vary on this album, their is a brooding feeling that encompasses it throughout its entirety. They also prove that intense albums can feature great songwriting.  On the track that gave the album its name “Adore” an early question is posed: “Is it human to adore life?” This leads to great lyrics/ vocals surrounded by great background exploring the fragility of life.  I love how they put the vocals in the foreground, something that is not the case for many bands with the “post punk” label.  Another highlight is the terrific and driving bass lines laid down by bassist Aysr Hassan (especially on the first half of the album).  I often find myself focusing on them, as opposed to the guitars.  This is not something you often find yourself keying in on when listening to most albums.  In addition to this being a great album, I think this would be a great band to see live, due to the emotion packed within each of their songs.  I am looking forward to seeing Savages soon as they are coming to Dallas at Trees on April 16.
